Taking back Shelly’s story.
In honor of
Carry the Fire Fund
In Cormac McCarthy’s The Road, a dying father tells his young son, who begs to go with him, that he can’t. The boy has to go on. He has to carry the fire.
When Shelly died, I felt like that boy. So did so many of us who loved him. Part of us went into the dark with him, and part of us wanted to stay there. But we can’t stay there. We have to go on.
Those who knew Shelly Perelman knew the fire in him: his character, his integrity, what he stood for. His final choice cannot be his defining choice. That fire did not go out with him. It is time for it to illuminate the darkness.

The Shelly Perelman Carry the Fire Fund
“The candle of God is the soul of a man.” (Proverbs 20:27) In Jewish tradition, the body is the candle: finite, and in time it burns down. The soul is the flame. The wax melts, but the flame can pass from one candle to the next and outlast death itself. We cannot change how Shelly’s life ended. But we can carry his flame, the true story of who he was, and fan it into a fire that lights the path for men still in the dark, giving them the hope he could not find.
This is what Shelly would want, what he deserves, and why we have launched the Shelly Perelman Carry the Fire Fund.
How you can carry Shelly’s fire
Every gift to the Shelly Perelman Carry the Fire Fund keeps his flame burning, funding inspiration, meaning and connection that bring light to men in the dark.
This is how we honor Shelly, reclaim his story, and carry his fire.
Your gift is tax deductible.
The first flame
From Shelly’s flame we will light the next candle, and the one after that. Every family that starts a Carry the Fire Fund in their loved one’s name adds another light, another way to carry the fire.
Let’s talk about carrying Shelly’s fire.
